After launching WordPress 5.9 a few months back, which brought much-needed improvements to the editing experience, WordPress is taking things a step further by integrating full site editing, blocks, style themes and much more.
WordPress has pulled the curtain and unveiled the latest version recently. Codenamed “Arturo”, WordPress 6.0 brings more than 1000 minor and major improvements and enhancements over its predecessor.
You might be tricked into thinking that it is a complete revamp just by looking at the sheer number of improvements and enhancements and the version number but it is just an incremental update.
According to WordPress, “Site owners and administrators should upgrade to take full advantage of the many stability, performance, and usability enhancements today. WordPress content creators will enjoy a suite of new features geared toward improving the writing and designing experiences.”
WordPress wants you to install the latest version right now so website owners can take advantage of the new features. The core focus of the WordPress 6.0 is on enhancing the writing and designing experience of WordPress users.
If you are interested in learning more about the new shiny features WordPress 6.0 brings to the table, you have come to the right place. In this article, you will learn about five new features of WordPress 6.0 and how these features will impact your business.
Here are five new WordPress 6.0 features that you can not afford to ignore.
Before the introduction of page creation patterns, anybody who wanted to create a WordPress website had to start from scratch. They used to start from a blank layout page and work their way up from there. Thanks to page creation patterns, you can choose design patterns from different layouts to get started. This can reduce the time required to create a full-fledged WordPress website and make WordPress blog creation a lot more convenient.
Sadly, WordPress does not come with these layouts by default. Theme developers will have to integrate these features into their themes for them to work. Instead of using patterns for creating a new design, you can also use them for layout transformation as well. This means that you can tweak your content layout without disturbing the content inside it.
WordPress developers always dreamed of creating dynamic and flexible containers that can adjust according to the situation automatically. WordPress 6.0 turns that dream into reality with its stack and row variation. Now, you can create a flexible and dynamic container by stacking blocks into columns and rows.
This means that the container can shrink when you are viewing the website on a mobile device and expand when you are viewing it on a device with a larger screen such as a tablet or laptop. To demonstrate this, WordPress released a video.
When you are working with blocks, there is a high risk of accidentally moving a block to the wrong place or deleting it altogether by mistake. Previously, there was no way to prevent that. Fortunately, WordPress 6.0 brings a handy block locking feature to prevent such accidents. Even though you can not lock changes made to the block content, it can certainly minimize the risk of accidental block deletion and movement.
That is exactly what Andrew Wilder of NerdPress highlighted when he said, “I am also glad to see the new Block Locking feature – right now it doesn’t let you lock changes to the block content, but it can stop you from accidentally moving or deleting a block.”
If you are creating a WordPress website using editors, you might be using blocks. These blocks act as basic building blocks for your website. Think of these blocks as containers where you can insert website elements such as text, videos, images and more. Courtesy of the multi-select feature in WordPress 6.0, users can now select content from multiple blocks without even selecting those blocks.
Check out this tweet to see this feature in action. WordPress also released a video showing off how the multi-select feature works. If you have been publishing content on your block-based WordPress website, you might be familiar with the ordeal. This feature will fix this issue and make content management a breeze.
Previously when you purchased a WordPress theme, you couldnot change the layout of that theme. This limits the ability to change the look and feel of your website. Thanks to WordPress 6.0’s style variation feature, now you can easily do that. Theme developers can now empower users by letting them make changes to their website without having to tinker with HTML and CSS code.
Let’s say, you don’t like the colors and fonts of the theme you just bought. You can use the site variation feature to change it without even making changes to your HTML and CSS code. This can save a lot of time as you don’t have to change or write CSS code for every design change you make in your theme.
Some changes will be implemented instantly so you will notice them immediately such as improvements to website performance. Other features such as page creation patterns might take longer so you might have to wait to experience them.
